10 Interesting Hair Facts

Hair is as amazing and unique as the person it belongs to. Therefore, learning the facts about your hair is essential! From stick straight to big and curly, hair can be found in all colours, textures, and lengths, and can go through many changes throughout life. Style trends, haircuts, and hair colours all go through transitions and can be drastically unique from one day to the next.

If you think you know everything there is to know about your hair, think again. You may know how to style it or whether or not you want to finally get those layers you’ve been thinking about at your next hairdressers’ appointment, but there’s a lot of weird and wonderful stuff going on up there that we rarely give a second thought. Or just had no idea about before.

So here’s 10 hair facts that may just blow your mind, or at least make you rethink the extent of your hair knowledge…

  1. If you think about individual hairs there’s obviously too many to count. The average person has between 75,000 to 150,000 hairs on their head!

  2. The lifespan of each hair, so before it falls out naturally, varies between 2 – 7 years! Whereas eyebrows and eyelashes have a much shorter lifespan of only about 3 – 5 months.

  3. On average, you lose around 50-150 strands of hair a day just from them falling out naturally.

  4. Hair is more elastic that you think. When your hair is wet or even damp, a healthy strand of hair can stretch up to an additional 30% of its original length.

  5. In terms of natural hair colour, black is the most common hair colour in the world. Ginger, which only exists in about 1% of the world’s population, is the rarest. Blonde hair comes in a close second, with only 2% of the population.

  6. Beauty can take time, but how much time does hair take? The average time a woman spends to wash, dry and style her hair is 1 hour and 50 minutes a week. By the time she is 65, she will have spent 7 months of her life doing her hair. Doesn’t even seem like a waste of time.

  7. Here’s a weird one to think about. All of the hair follicles in the human body are formed by the time we are just five months old in the womb.

  8. Bald patches only begin to become visible to you once you’ve lost over 50 percent of the hairs from your scalp.

  9. A single strand of hair can support up to 100 grams in weight. Multiply that by the average 75,000 to 150,000 strands on each head, and your entire head of hair could support the weight equivalent to two elephants. I don’t recommend trying that one at home.

  10. On average, your hair grows 0.3 – 0.5 mm every day, 1.25 centimetres or 0.5 inches per month, and 15 centimetres or 6 inches per year. So, if you’re trying to grow out your hair, it takes about 7 years to grow it to your waist and 3 years to grow it to your shoulders!

Now that you’ve learned ten interesting facts about your hair, remember, while everyone’s hair care routine may be uniquely different and personalized, deep down our hair has many similarities. And if you think about it, its pretty amazing as well.
